Install RSAT on Windows 10

 Installing RSAT on Windows 10 is fairly straight forward nowadays. A lot of blogs will tell you to do a simple PowerShell:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name RSAT* | Add-WindowsCapability -Online

This is all well and good, but leaves you with likely a lot of bloat on your system depending on what you are looking for. If you run the following command it will show you everything you are installing with the above command:

PS C:\> (Get-WindowsCapability -Online -name RSAT*).name

If you don't need all of these tools, it is simple to filter out the ones you need. Just create an array of the app(s) you want to install and use that to filter through the above results. In the following example, I only want the AD tools, Bitlocker related tools, and GPO console, so I'll use a foreach loop to only install the RSAT component if the name matches (match can be at the beginning, middle, or end of the name) one of the components we wish to install:

$rsatApps = "ActiveDirectory","Bitlocker","GroupPolicy"

$allRSAT = Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name RSAT*

Foreach ($app in $rsatApps) {

  $allRSAT | Where-Object { $_.name -match $app } | Add-WindowsCapability -Online

}

There you go. Using a scalpel instead of a shotgun.
